Community News & Programs

National School Food Program – Request for 2 Quick Actions By March 9th

The federal government is funding $1B for a National School Food Program. The funding will be used to provide students with nutritious meals, promoting health and well-being across Canada’s school communities. The government of BC can access millions of dollars of this funding just by signing an Agreement (that five other provinces have already signed) — but they need to sign it by March 9th!

Vancouver DPAC, in partnership with BC’s Coalition for Healthy School Food, is asking our provincial government to sign the Agreement, and we need your help! To make this vision a reality, we need to gather as much grassroot support as possible before the March 9th deadline. We’ve made it super easy for you to ask Premier Eby to sign the Agreement. Please just fill out the form here and click submit.

As we approach the Spring Term, I wanted to send out a reminder that
Lights Up is happy to sponsor one student per term, as recommended by
the school or PAC on a full scholarship basis.

This can be based on financial need or, in the case the school thinks
a student might benefit from a performing arts program, but the
parents might not sign them up without this offer for whatever reason.

We keep all scholarship info confidential and instructors are not
aware of the financial status of any of the students in class.

In addition to this scholarship, we can accommodate any student who
requires 1:1 support during the class on a full scholarship, providing
that support is present with the student during class. This is to help
offset the cost families may incur in securing this support outside of
school hours.

We have had some amazing students come to us through recommendation of
schools and hope this reminder will help us to continue connecting to
your greater school communities! Please reach out to me if you have
any questions regarding this.

UEL Official Community Plan Update

The University Endowment Lands (UEL) is updating its Official Community Plan (OCP), last updated 2005. Since then, a lot has changed in the community. Particularly with the Provinces recent housing initiatives, Bill 44 (Small-Scale, Multi-Unit Housing or SSMUH) and Bill 47 (Transit-Oriented Areas or TOA) to create more housing.

As we update our OCP, we want to engage as many community members as possible via our survey and upcoming workshops. Grateful if you and the committee could get involved and share the following survey link on your forums and with those you know to garner community involvement. Your feedback will help shape policy to be included in the updated OCP.

The survey closes midnight March 7, 2025 and takes about 10 minutes to complete: Please click here to complete the survey.

Additionally, there is a community workshop taking place March 4th at the leləm̓ Community Centre

For more information, please visit the UEL OCP Update webpage here.
